• How long did it take from when you started taking opioids to becoming dependent and addicted?
I was prescribed a lot of opioids for my injuries and became dependent and addicted shortly after taking them – that’s the thing with opioids, you can become dependent and addicted within 5 days which is why it is so important to talk to your parents and doctors and look for alternatives. And, if you do take opioids to o my take the minimum dose and to be aware of the signs and symptoms of dependency so you can get help right away.

• How were you able recognize you had a substance use disorder and get the help you needed?
It took me a long time to accept that I had become addicted and when I did, to admit I needed help. With the support of my wife I found recovery – But, if you need help, ask for help. And if you think someone needs help, help them!

• What is the most important advice you would give to a high school athlete who suffers an injury?
That one games doesn’t make your career. And to take care of yourself – mentally and physically, so you can be the best athlete you can be.

• What would you do differently in your career if you knew the risks of prescription opioids?
I’d look for alternatives to opioids and I would prioritize my mental and physical health.

• How much information were you given about painkillers when they were prescribed?
I wasn’t given any information.

• Do you know other players who had similar experiences as you did?
Yes. And, you will encounter teammates and friends with issues as well as you go on in your career and life – and, I beg you – make sure they know – if they need help, they should ask for help.

• Was it difficult for you when you first decided to talk about your addiction?
No, because I hope what I shared can help prevent someone from going down the same path as me and can save a life.
